The hiking route takes a short trip around the village Jegerup before it comes to Vojens. From Vojens the hiking route goes to the east through Haderslevdalen and past Stevning pond. The bicycle route goes to the south from Vojens and meets the hiking route by the beautifully situated Vedsted lakes. From there the route goes to the south past the extensive bogs Abkær Mose and Stengelmose.

1. Tørning Voldsted and Mill

Southeast of Stevning Pond the hiking route comes past an embankment establishment and a park area by Tørning Mill. In the 14 th and the 15 th century battles between Holstein counts and the Danish kings took place, and here the castle Tørninghus, which was the biggest castle in South Jutland, played a big role. The castle was located on a peninsula in Haderslevdalen (the Haderslev vally), and this location made it possible to control the traffic in the area.

Tørning Mill was built in 1908, and contains a working electricity/hydroelectric power station (open 1. May - 1. Sunday in September). North of the mill lies a mill bridge which was built by German pioneer soldiers just before World War I. In the park you will find rare trees and fine resort areas. In “the district bailiff’s house” there is an information centre with a landscape exhibition.

2. Christiansdal Water-power establishment

After Tørning Mill the hiking route goes to the south, but you might take a side trip eastwards to Christiansdal Water-power establishment, which has been using the water power since the late 18th century.

The electricity station is still in use, and it is a living museum. It is only open as agreed. If you need a rest, you will find a tent place here. It is also a possibility to take a walk to Haderslev along Hindemade, through Haderslev Sønderskov and Dyrehaven. “Geheimeråden`s sti“ (path) goes south of Haderslev Dam and into the town.

Haderslevdalen is additionally described in the folders the paths of the subglacial stream trenches Tunneldalsstierne and Pamhule og Haderslev Sønderskov (The Forest and Nature agency).

3. The Bronze Age house

West of the bicycle route, just south of Vojens you will find Denmark’s second largest Bronze Age site which was found in connection to excavations in 1993. The house could have been the Skrydstrup girl’s home.

4. The Skrydstrup-girl’s Grave

1 km southwest of Vojens towards Over Jerstal lies a hill where the Skydstrup girl was found in 1935. The grave contained the dead body of a girl about 19 years old who was entombed in the middle of the Early Bronze Age, around 1300 BC.

The find is exhibited at the national museum in Copenhagen, but at Haderslev Museum you can see replicas of the Skrydstrup-girl’s dress.

5. The passage graves

From the Skrydstrup-girl’s hill some few kilometres to the south on the country road between Vojens and Over Jerstal, you will find a smaller group of burial mounds west of the road to where there is public access. The graves date from the middle part of the Farming Stone Age, around 3000 BC.

6. Vedsted Høje

Around the Vedsted lakes there are many well-preserved burial mounds, for example northeast of Vedsted Church. The hiking route goes past several Bronze Age hills by Vedsted Præstevej down to Vedsted Lake. There is a path around the lake and in the southeast end there is an open-air swimming pool and a resort area.

7. Pothøj and Sikringsstilling Nord

From Ll. Vedbølvej a path leads up to Pothøj. At the west side of Pothøj lays a well-preserved high observation bunker from Sikringsstilling Nord (the fortified position north). Sikringsstilling Nord was a fortification across South Jutland that was built in 1916-1918 while South Jutland was German. Originally the position consisted of 900 concrete bunkers of which 31 have been made open to the public.

8. The long barrows by Holmhus

By Holmshus lies one of Jutland’s most impressive establishments from the Stone Age. It consists of among other things two parallel long barrows, both more than 100m long. There is access to a big passage grave (remember torch), and over the long barrow’s chamber lies a 7-ton-heavy deck stone. The building of which has represented an overwhelming performance at the time - 3200 BC.

9. Abkær Mose and Stengelmose

The Hærvej route follows the edge of the preserved raised bog areas Abkær Mose and Stengelmose. By the country road between the bogs you will find a bird tower about 1/2 km west of the route from where you can see across Abkær Mose.
